The thing that finally made Hannah look was a name she genuinely did not recognize.
Nine characters. Half of it capitals. It looked like a parking company or a dental practice or one of those firms that turn out to own eleven other firms, and it had been taking a small amount out of her account on the twenty-third of every month for a length of time she could not establish, because when she scrolled back to find the beginning she never got to one.
She sat there with her thumb on the glass, doing the thing everybody does, which is trying to remember an evening.
There must have been one. There is always an evening. Some Thursday, tired, on the sofa, with something on in the background, and a screen said a thing and she said yes to it, and the yes was so small it did not qualify as a decision and left no trace of itself anywhere in her memory at all.
So she did something she had never done in her life. She wrote them all down.
Not the big things. Everybody knows the big things; the rent knows its own name. She wrote down every small recurring one on the page, in a list, on the back of an envelope, and it took her twenty minutes and it filled the envelope.
And then she sat and looked at the list, and the list looked back.
Because here is what she had not expected. It was not a list of waste. Some of them she used all the time and would fight you for. Some of them were for the kids. A couple of them she had honestly forgotten she had and was pleased to be reminded of.
It was something stranger and more useful than a list of waste.
It was a map of every direction her attention had gone in for about four years.
There was a version of her on that envelope who was going to get fit in a particular way. There was a version who was learning a language. There was a stretch in the middle, six or seven of them all started within about two months, that she could date exactly, because it was the winter after her father died and she had bought her way into a great many hopeful things very quickly and quietly and never told anyone.
She read that envelope the way you read an old diary.
Now, I want to say the important thing before we go anywhere else, because this is where somebody starts being unkind to themselves in their own kitchen.
Hannah has not been careless. She is not a woman who leaks money. Every one of those little agreements was made by a real person for a real reason on a real evening, and about half of them were good decisions and the other half were an ordinary human being reaching for something after a hard winter.
Nothing on that envelope is shameful.
It is simply that nobody had ever read it as a whole, and a thing that is never read as a whole gets to say whatever it likes about you.
You have your own envelope. You have a set of small ongoing yeses that you would need twenty minutes and a pen to reconstruct, and you have never once put them side by side and looked at what they add up to as a description.
Nobody is calling you disorganized. You may be the most organized person in your street.
You just have not read the list.

The small things are not small, and that is good news
There is a line of Jesus that gets used as a threat and was never meant as one.
He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much.Luke 16:10
We hear that as a warning: get the little things right or you will not be trusted with the big ones. And there is something in that. But hear the other half of it, which is the half nobody preaches.
He is saying the little ones count. He is saying that the small, boring, unwatched, twenty-third-of-the-month decisions are not the warm-up act before your real life. They are your real life. He is dignifying the very things you thought were beneath noticing.
And that is enormous, because it means the reverse is true too. You are not waiting on a big moment to change direction. That is not motivational talk: the written word puts the least and the much in the same sentence on purpose, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that dignity land on a woman with an envelope and a biro rather than leaving it a nice idea.
You do not need a dramatic season. You have a list and a pen and a Saturday morning.
Now hear the direction of the other verse, the one about treasure, because near everybody has it backwards. Where the treasure is, there the heart will be also. The treasure goes first, and the heart follows it and settles there.
So you are not stuck behind a feeling you cannot produce. That is the plain order of the written word, and the Holy Spirit set it down that way because He knows exactly how much warmth a person has available at nine on a Thursday night, which is none.
Move something small. The heart comes on after it, walking.
What the winter after your father died bought
I want to stop on the six or seven in the middle, because they are the reason this message exists.
Grief does not always announce itself. It quite often goes shopping. And there is a particular kind of small hopeful yes that a person says in a bad season, over and over, in the dark, on a sofa, which is not greed and not foolishness and not weakness. It is a human being trying to buy a door back into a life that has gone strange.
If your envelope has a cluster on it and you can date the cluster, be gentle with the woman who made it. She was doing her best in the worst month of her life.
And you are not being audited. God is not going through that winter line by line. The word says He knows our frame and remembers we are dust, and His Spirit was present in every one of those evenings, closer than the screen, not once disgusted.
And what you were reaching for in that winter is not lost. He restores the years the locusts ate, says the written word, and the Spirit has never been embarrassed by a person who tried to fix a grief with a small hopeful yes and could not.
So here is the moment, and it is an envelope, not a reformation.
Read one line out loud.
Not the whole list. Not a plan for the year, and not a promise made standing up at ten at night, which is the worst hour there has ever been for deciding anything. One line, spoken into the air of the room you are in, so it stops being a name in a column and turns into a sentence about a life.
Something happens when a thing is said out loud that does not happen when it is read. That is why He gave us confession rather than mere agreement, and it is His Spirit who makes a spoken sentence land in a person instead of sliding off them.
You can read the list without dread. Not once it is tidy, and not once you feel stronger about it: the word says there is no condemnation now for anyone in Christ, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that true in a body, so a woman's shoulders come down as she reads instead of going up. If what rises off that envelope is despair, it did not come from Him.
And the yeses you would say now are already yours to say. God is not withholding permission for a person to point their small ongoing agreements at what they actually love. Every good gift comes down from the Father of lights, says the word, and His Spirit lets a daughter spend like a daughter rather than like somebody apologizing at a gate.
Read the list. That is the whole move.
Declare this over yourself
- Twenty-third of the month, you are a small agreement and you are not a description of me. Scripture says the one faithful in the least is faithful in much, so you are not beneath my noticing and you are not above my saying no.
- Old shame of that winter, get out of this kitchen in the name of Jesus. You have been holding six hopeful yeses over a woman who had just buried her father, and God has never once been disgusted by a person reaching in the dark.
- Lord, my heart follows my treasure, so I am moving the treasure, and what I say I love and what I fund are becoming the same thing. You were closer than the screen on every one of those evenings, and reading the whole list out in the light is what I am doing this morning.
