Where It WentPsalm 90:12

The Line You Would Read Aloud

This message is for the one line on the statement you would gladly read out in company, and the one you would quietly skip past

Ari's father used to read the household accounts out loud on a Friday, and Ari has spent about thirty years deciding whether that was a good idea.

It was not a performance and it was not a punishment. The old man simply sat at the end of the table after the meal, with the book, and read the week out. What came in, what went out, in order, in a normal voice, with the children present and entirely bored.

Ari has never once done it. He would tell you, and he would be right, that his father's house was a different kind of house and those were different times and there are perfectly good reasons why a man does not read his statement aloud at his own table in front of his own children.

But this last winter he was sitting up late with the page open on his knee, and for no reason at all he thought about his father's voice doing that, and he started reading down the column in his head in his father's cadence.

And he got about eleven lines and stopped.

Not because of the amount. That was not it. He stopped because he had come to a line he did not want to say out loud, and he had known he did not want to say it two lines before he reached it.

Then, because he is his father's son and cannot leave a thing where it is, he went back to the top and did the whole page that way. And he found there were only really three categories on it.

Lines he would happily read out. Most of them, in fact.

Lines that would need one short sentence of explanation, and he did not mind giving it.

And a very small number, three or four, that he would rather skip, and that he had known he would skip before he arrived at them.

Now I want to be careful here, because a message can do real damage at exactly this point.

That flinch is not a verdict. It is not evidence of sin, and it is not a hidden crime coming to light. Some of what a person would rather not read out is genuinely nobody's business, and privacy is not shame. A gift, a kindness, a thing to do with someone else's dignity, a medical matter: there are honorable reasons a line stays quiet.

But some of it is different, and you know the difference the way you know the difference between a locked door and a held breath.

One kind of line is private. The other kind is not private, it is unlit, and it has been unlit for so long that it has come to feel private.

Ari sat there with the page and thought: my father did not read it out because his affairs were tidy. He read it out because reading a thing out is what stops it going strange.

You have your own version of this. There is a line on your page you would read out without a flicker, and there is one you would skip, and you did not need to look to know which. It took you no time at all to find it.

Nobody is accusing you of anything. That flinch is not a charge sheet.

It is only information, and it arrived faster than any other information about your life ever has.

The Line You Would Read Aloud

Numbering is not counting

There is a prayer in the Psalms that gets read as though it were about mortality and arithmetic, and it is about neither.

So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.Psalm 90:12

To number is not to count how many are left. Nobody knows that and the psalm is not offering a figure. To number is to reckon, to take account, to look at a thing squarely and put it in its place. And the reason given is not so that we will be frightened. It is so the heart may be applied to wisdom, which is to say: so that the heart can be pointed somewhere on purpose.

He asks God to teach him this, which tells you something. A man who could do it by willpower would not need to pray for it.

So hear what is already true over you as you sit there. You are not being audited. That is not my kindness talking: the written word says there is now no condemnation for anyone in Christ, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my paragraph who makes that land in a body, so a man reading his own page at midnight finds his shoulders going down rather than up.

And what rose when you thought of the line you would skip is already understood. God has not just now discovered it. The word says He knew every one of my days before there was one of them, and His Spirit has been present at every line on that column, closer than the screen, and He has never once been disgusted by any of it.

The flinch is not Him accusing you. Very often the flinch is Him showing you where the light has not been for a while.

The verse runs downhill, and that is the mercy

Now hear what Jesus said about treasure, because near everybody has it pointing the wrong way.

Where the treasure is, there the heart will be also. The treasure goes first. The heart follows it there and settles.

We quote it backwards, as though He said get your heart right and the money will follow, which puts the entire weight on producing a feeling. And a man sitting up at midnight with a page on his knee has no feelings available. That is not a fault in him. That is midnight.

So you are not shut out behind an emotion you cannot summon. That is the plain order of the written word, and the Holy Spirit set it down that way on purpose, because He knows precisely how much warmth a person has left at the hour when they finally open the page.

You move one thing. The heart comes on behind it in its own time, and it does not need convincing.

And here is the shape of the whole matter, and the shape teaches: a thing said out loud stops being able to grow in the dark. That is not a technique and it is certainly not magic. It is simply that speech puts an object in a room where two people can look at it, and one of those two has been in the room the entire time anyway.

The breakthrough

So here is the moment, and it is a bulb, not a renovation.

Read one line out loud.

And I am not going to require it to be the one you would skip. Hear that clearly, because I know what you are bracing for. It can be any line at all. The one you are proudest of will do the work perfectly well, because the point is not exposure, it is the ending of the silence that made a column feel like a private country.

Say it into the air of the room you are in, exactly as it is written, so it stops being a figure in a list and becomes a sentence about a life.

Something happens when a thing is said aloud that does not happen when it is read. That is why He gave us confession rather than mere agreement, and it is His Spirit who makes a spoken sentence land in a person instead of glancing off them.

You are safe to speak here. Not once the page is tidy, and not once the skipped line is dealt with: the word says perfect love casts out fear, and the Spirit is entirely able to make a midnight kitchen a place where a man can say a true sentence without bracing for the answer.

And nothing you say tonight is news to Him. He has known every one of your days from before there was one of them, says the written word, and the Spirit who has been beside you at every line is not waiting there to correct you. He is waiting there to be with you.

Change the bulb. That is the whole move.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Line I would skip, you are unlit and you are not unspeakable. Scripture says teach us to number our days, and numbering is looking squarely, so the light in this passage is going back on tonight.
  2. Old dread of being found out, get out of this kitchen in the name of Jesus. God knew every one of my days before there was one of them, and there is nothing on this page He is discovering.
  3. Lord, You have been beside me at every line on this column and never once been disgusted. My heart follows my treasure, so I am moving the treasure, and saying one true sentence out loud in this room is what I am doing now.
