Aine has not had a silent minute since a Tuesday in April four years ago, and she can name the Tuesday.
Nothing happened on it that anybody would call an event. There was a conversation, and a piece of information arrived in it, and the information was not catastrophic and did not require any immediate action, and she went home and made the tea.
And something in the back of her mind started calculating, and it has not stopped since.
It is very quiet. That is what makes it survivable. It is not panic and it is not a racing mind at four in the morning, and she sleeps reasonably well and she would tell you she is fine, and she is largely telling the truth. It is more like a fridge in another room. You do not hear it until it stops, and it has not stopped.
She noticed it properly in a church, which is where these things tend to get noticed.
They were singing something she loves, and she was singing it, and meaning it, and somewhere around the second time through she became aware that underneath the singing, in a completely separate compartment, a small calculation was running. Not about anything urgent. Just running. Working the same problem it has worked for four years, quietly, competently, in the background, while the rest of her worshipped.
And it did not stop for the singing. It has never once stopped for the singing.
She stood there for the last chorus with her mouth moving and thought: I have not brought all of myself into a room in four years.
Now, I want to sit here for a moment rather than hurrying to fix it, because I think the hurrying is part of what is wrong.
That calculation is not a sin, and I am not going to call it one. It is what a responsible mind does with an unresolved problem, and it is doing it precisely because Aine is the kind of person who takes things seriously. If she were careless it would have stopped four years ago.
And she is not failing at worship. She was not pretending in that room. Her mouth and her heart were both in the song and both meant it, and the thing running underneath was not competing for her attention or trying to.
That is exactly the trouble. It does not compete. It does not need her attention. It has been running without ever once asking her permission, and a thing that runs without permission is not a distraction.
It is a master.
You have your own version. There is something in you that has been running quietly under everything since a particular week, and you could probably name the week, and you have never had a completely silent hour since.
Nobody is calling you a poor worshipper. That is not this.
Something has simply never stopped, and worship has been happening on top of it rather than instead of it.

Paul defines a master by obedience, not by affection
There is a sentence in Romans that quietly redefines what it means to serve something.
Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey?Romans 6:16
He does not say whose servants you are is decided by what you love. He does not say it is decided by what you declare, or by what you sing, or by what you would put on a form.
It is decided by what you obey.
And obedience, in this sense, is not dramatic. It is what you actually do when the two disagree, and more than that, it is what runs in you without needing to be told to.
That is why Aine's fridge in another room matters. Nobody switched it on. Nobody has to keep switching it on. It runs.
And now hear what is already true over you. You are not a servant of that thing. That is not sentiment: the written word says you were bought at a price and are not your own, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my paragraph who bears witness with your spirit that the ownership question was closed a long time before that Tuesday in April.
And you have not been failing to worship. The word says the Spirit Himself makes intercession within us with groanings that cannot be uttered, which means there has been something running under all of this that was never yours to start and has never once needed your attention either, and it has been going for far longer than four years.
There have been two things running underneath. You only knew about one of them.
Nobody is coming for your thinking
I want to be plain here, because this is where a message like this tells somebody to stop worrying as though that were an available option, and it is not, and telling a person to stop is a way of blaming them for not having stopped.
Nobody here is telling you to switch it off. I do not think you can, and I am not going to make your peace with God depend on a thing you cannot do. If it were a matter of deciding, you would have decided four years ago, because you are not slow and you have thought about this more than I have.
And nobody is telling you that the problem is that you care about the outcome. Caring is not the rival. Considering a real thing carefully is what a serious person does with a real thing.
The question is not whether it runs.
The question is what it is, because a thing that has never once stopped is not a thought. Thoughts stop. This one has been given something else's job.
And you are able to be quiet. Not once it stops on its own: the word says He leads me beside still waters and He restores my soul, and both of those verbs belong to Him rather than to you, and it is the Spirit who does the leading and the restoring in a woman who has not had a silent hour in four years.
And the other one was never paying you anything. Four years of continuous calculation has not resolved one thing. Not one. The written word says be careful for nothing, and that word is about being pulled in two directions, and the Spirit is entirely able to make the pulling stop without the problem being solved first.
So here is the moment, and it is one hand, not a silenced mind.
Hold both hands out in front of you.
That is the four years, in a picture. Two of them, level, both up, one of them holding the singing and one of them holding a calculation that never once asked to be held.
Now lower one. Deliberately. And leave it down.
You are not lowering your care. The thinking stays. The problem stays real and it stays yours to look at in daylight with a clear head. What goes down is a claim: that it gets to run underneath everything without permission, and the word has already named who has that place, so this is agreement and not effort.
And the hand that stays up is not gripping God. He has hold of you. He is able to keep you from falling, says the word, and the Spirit makes that true in a body, so the raised hand is open and receiving rather than clenched.
That is the whole move. It does not require the calculation to stop tonight, and it does not require you to feel anything at all.
Declare this over yourself
- Small calculation, you are a thought and you were never a master. Scripture says whom I obey, his servant I am, and you have been running without permission, which is a job nobody gave you.
- Old certainty that it must never stop, get out of this house in the name of Jesus. Four years of running has not resolved one single thing, and you have been on a stuck float the whole time.
- Lord, You lead me beside still waters and You restore my soul, and both of those were always Yours to do. You bought me at a price, the other one never paid me a wage, and my hand is down and it is staying down.
