Where It WentLuke 12:34

The Caravan You Already Let Go Of

This message is for the thing you already decided in your heart to let go of, and have kept paying to keep alive for two more years

Graham has not been to the coast in two years, and he pays for the coast on the fourteenth of every month.

The caravan is on a site about two hours north, on a pitch he chose himself in a good year, and it was the best money he ever spent for about eleven summers. There are photographs. There is a step his wife painted blue. There is a particular Friday evening every August that the whole family still refers to by name.

Then his daughter moved. Then his knee. Then the year that took the wind out of everything, and the site fees went out, and the insurance went out, and there was a bill in the spring for something on the roof that he paid without really looking at.

And here is the part that Graham could not explain to anybody, including himself.

He had already let it go. Not out loud, and not to his wife, and not on any form. But there had been an evening, sometime the winter before last, standing at the sink with the radio on, when he had known, in the settled way a man knows a thing, that they were not going back.

That was the decision. It was made. It went through him like a door closing quietly in another room.

And on the fourteenth of the following month, the money went out again.

It has gone out every month since. He has paid the fees and the insurance and a bill for the roof on a caravan his heart handed back before the last frost. He is not confused about it. If you sat him down he would tell you exactly what I have just told you, in about four sentences, and then he would go quiet.

Because the question he cannot answer is not why did I buy a caravan. That was a good decision made by a happy man.

The question is: what have I been buying for two years?

And he knows the answer, and it is not the caravan. He has been buying the version of the family where everybody is still two hours north on a Friday in August. He has been paying the fees on a photograph.

You have your own version of this, and it will not be a caravan.

It is the thing you already know about. Something in your life has already been decided, quietly, somewhere near a sink, and the money has not been told. It is still going out on the fourteenth for a thing your heart finished with a long time ago, and every month it goes out it says, in the only language a statement speaks, that the thing is still alive.

Nobody is accusing you of anything here. You are not a fraud and you are not being sentimental and you have not wasted your life.

Your heart moved. The money did not get the message.

The Caravan You Already Let Go Of

The verse runs forwards, and nearly everybody runs it backwards

We quote this one as though Jesus said: get your heart right and your money will follow. Which puts the entire weight on producing a feeling, and if you have ever tried to produce a feeling on purpose you already know how that goes.

Hear the direction He actually gave it.

For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.Luke 12:34

The treasure goes first. The heart follows it there.

Now that is either a threat or a mercy depending on which way you are facing, and I want you to hear it as the mercy it is. You are not stuck behind a feeling you cannot manufacture. That is not my encouragement, that is the plain order of the written word, and the Holy Spirit set it down that way knowing precisely how little authority a tired man has over his own affections on a Tuesday night.

You do not have to feel first. You move something, and the heart comes along behind it, on foot, at the speed hearts actually travel.

But Graham's case is the other one, and it is the one nobody preaches. His heart went first. It went eighteen months ago at the sink. The treasure is the thing that has not caught up.

And here is the freedom in it. You are not required to keep funding a thing in order to stay loyal to the people you loved there. Nothing in Scripture ties your faithfulness to a direct debit, and the Spirit of God has never once asked a man to keep paying a site fee in order to honor eleven good summers. Those summers are not stored in the pitch. They are not held up by the insurance. They happened. They are yours. They are not going anywhere if the money stops.

What the money is actually saying

I am not going to tell you to cancel anything. I want to be plain about that, because this is exactly where a message like this stops being ministry and starts being advice, and I am not competent to give you advice about a single figure in your life and I am not going to pretend otherwise.

I am telling you what the page is for.

A statement has no opinion about you. It cannot flatter and it cannot accuse. It is simply a record, with dates, of what a man did with what he had, and that makes it one of the very few honest mirrors most of us own.

And you can look into it without dread. That is not nerve, that is your standing: the written word says there is no condemnation now for anyone in Christ, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that land in the body, so a man opening the app feels his shoulders drop instead of rise. Conviction shows you something and hands you a door. Condemnation shows you something and walks off. If what comes up off that page is despair, it did not come from Him.

And the decision you already made at the sink was not disloyalty. God is not standing over that evening with His arms folded. The word says He knows our frame and remembers we are dust, and His Spirit was in that quiet knowing with you, which is why it went through you so gently and why you have never been able to argue yourself back out of it.

Your heart has been telling the truth for eighteen months. All that is left is to let the money agree with it.

The breakthrough

So here is the moment, and it is smaller than you have braced for.

Read one line out loud.

Not the whole statement. Not a plan for the year, not a promise, not a decision made in a hurry at nine o'clock at night, which is the worst hour there is for decisions. One line, spoken into the air of the room you are in, so it stops being a figure in a column and becomes a sentence about a life.

Something happens when a thing is said aloud that does not happen when it is read. That is why He gave us confession rather than mere agreement, and it is His Spirit who makes a spoken sentence land in a person instead of glancing off.

You are free here. Not free later, and not free once the paperwork is sorted: the word says it is for freedom that Christ has set you free, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a man believe that about his own ordinary fourteenth of the month. You are allowed to stop paying for a photograph. You are allowed to keep eleven summers without a pitch under them.

And the good years are already yours. Nobody can invoice you for them and nobody can repossess them. God has kept every one of those Fridays in August, and the Spirit is well able to hand them back to you in a kitchen without a caravan anywhere in sight.

Let the two agree. That is all this is.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Fourteenth of the month, you are not a decision and you never were. Scripture says where the treasure is the heart follows, and my heart went north of you eighteen months ago at the kitchen sink.
  2. Old fear that letting the money stop means letting the good years go, get out of this kitchen in the name of Jesus. Eleven summers are not stored on a pitch, and nobody is repossessing a single Friday in August.
  3. Lord, my heart follows my treasure, so I am moving the treasure, and what I say I love and what I fund are becoming the same thing. You have kept every one of those good years for me, and letting the money agree with my own heart is what I am doing now.
