Maud has held on to a small thing since a year she does not talk about, and if you saw it you would think nothing of it at all.
That is the first thing to say. It is not valuable. It would not fetch anything. If the house burned down and somebody made a list of what was lost, it would not be on the list, and yet it is the item in that house that Maud could put her hand on in the dark.
It is not a keepsake, exactly. She has keepsakes and they sit out where people can see them, and she will tell you about any of them cheerfully. This one is not out. It is somewhere, and she knows where, and nobody else in that family knows it exists.
She has held it for thirty-one years.
She thought about it properly for the first time last spring, sitting on her own porch, when a neighbor was telling her about clearing out her mother's house and how much she had let go and how surprisingly all right she had felt about it.
Maud said the right things. She is good at the right things.
And afterwards, on her own, in the quiet, with the screen door doing what it does, she found herself thinking: I have kept that since the year.
The year does not need naming here and I am not going to name a version of it, because yours is not hers and I do not want you comparing. It is enough to say it was the worst one, and that Maud came out of it upright, and that she raised people afterwards who never knew how close a thing it had been.
And she picked that item up somewhere in the middle of it, without any ceremony, and she has never once let it go.
Now hear the thing I want said before anything else, because there is a version of this message that would do harm and I am not going to write it.
There is nothing wrong with Maud. Nothing at all. Keeping a small thing from a hard year is not idolatry, it is not weakness, and it is certainly not a failure to trust God. Half the sensible people you know are doing it right now and would be embarrassed to say so.
And I am not going to tell you that healed people let go of things. That is a lie, and it is a lie that has been used to shame people who were doing perfectly well.
What is worth looking at is only this: not whether you hold it, but whether your hand knows it is allowed to open. Those are two entirely different questions, and only one of them is worth an evening.
You have your own. It is small, it dates from a specific stretch, and you knew what it was before I finished describing hers.
Nobody is asking you for it. There is no ask at the end of this and no plate anywhere in it, and there never will be on this site.

The preacher's line about hands is not a threat
There is a verse in Ecclesiastes that gets read at funerals in a mournful voice, and it is much plainer than that.
As he came forth of his mother's womb, naked shall he return to go as he came, and shall take nothing of his labour, which he may carry away in his hand.Ecclesiastes 5:15
Which he may carry away in his hand. He is not moralizing. He is describing a physical fact about hands, and he is doing it in the same book where he tells people to eat their bread with joy and enjoy their work, which is not the writing of a man who despises having things.
The observation is only this: a hand is not a place things can be permanently kept. It never was. Nothing has ever stayed in one.
And that is not a warning about greed here. It is something gentler and more useful. It means the grip was never actually doing what it felt like it was doing. You have not been keeping that year alive by holding a small object. That is not my opinion: the written word says a hand carries nothing away, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my paragraph who makes that a relief instead of a threat when a woman is sitting on a porch at dusk.
And nothing about that year has been lost by you. The word says God keeps our tears in His bottle and writes them in His book, and that is not poetry about record keeping, it is a promise that the remembering does not depend on you, and the Spirit is the one who makes that land in a body that has been quietly on duty for thirty-one years.
Nobody is asking you to get rid of anything
I want to be very plain, because this is where a message like this starts telling grieving people to throw things away in order to prove something, and I would rather stop writing than do that.
Nobody here is telling you to let it go. Not the object, not any object. Keep it. Keep it for another thirty-one years if you want to, and there is no sentence coming later where I take that back.
And nobody is asking you for anything at all. Nothing is being asked of you at the end of this. No appeal, nothing gated, nothing held back behind a payment. If a page ever opens your hand and then points at a plate, close it and do not go back, and that is true of every page anywhere including this one.
I am also not going to tell you what the year was or what the thing means. I do not know, and guessing at a stranger's worst year and then preaching at the guess is how writing like this hurts people.
And your holding has never once disappointed Him. That is worth having plainly: the word says a bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, and it is the Spirit who makes that specific enough to include a small object in a drawer, which is exactly the kind of thing the phrase was written about.
What the grip is actually round
Here is the only thing worth asking tonight, and it is not should I keep it.
It is: does my hand still know how to open?
Because a hand that has held something for thirty-one years can forget, and the forgetting is not about the object at all. It shows up somewhere else entirely, in a general carefulness, in a slight reluctance to let anything be taken lightly, in the way a person holds a conversation about a hard thing.
That is the cost, and it is the only cost, and it has nothing to do with whether the item stays in the drawer.
And your hands were made to be open. Not once you are further on: the word says He openeth His hand and satisfieth the desire of every living thing, and that is His own posture toward you, and the Spirit is the one who makes a person able to mirror it without feeling that anything is being taken.
So here is the moment, and it is your own hand, in your own room, and nobody is watching.
Make a fist.
Not hard. Just close it, and hold it for as long as it stays comfortable. And while it is closed, notice one thing, gently: a closed hand cannot receive either. That is not an accusation. It is only how hands work, and it is the whole reason this is worth two minutes.
Then open it. And keep it open.
You are allowed to open your hand. Not once the year is fully dealt with, and not once you understand what the object is for: the word says it is for freedom that Christ has set us free, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that true in an actual hand on an actual porch this evening.
And nothing is being taken while it is open. Nobody here is asking, and God does not take things out of open hands to test people. The word says every good gift comes down from the Father of lights, and He is named as the giver in that sentence, and the Spirit bears witness with your spirit that this is His settled disposition and not a mood.
The object can stay exactly where it is. Your hand is what is being handed back to you.
Declare this over yourself
- Grip of thirty-one years, you are thirty-one years old and you were never what kept that year safe. Scripture says a hand carries nothing away, so you have not been holding anything up, and the remembering was never mine to do alone.
- Old carefulness, get out of this house in the name of Jesus. You taught a hand it was not safe to be used, and nobody ever formally told it otherwise, and I am telling it tonight.
- Lord, You open Your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing, and that is Your own posture toward me. My hands are open, what I was gripping was gripping me back, and I would rather have them free.
