The first time it cost her nothing, Marla was standing by the printer.
Somebody said a thing in the meeting that was not the whole truth, and she knew the part that was missing, and she felt the sentence come up in her throat the way a sentence does. Then the moment went past. Nobody looked at her. Nobody had to. She carried the warm pages back to her desk and the day went on being a day.
Three weeks later they gave her the parking space by the side door.
That was the price. Not a bribe, not an envelope, not one of the things a person could point at afterwards and say, there, that is where it happened. A parking space. Fourteen steps of shelter in the rain, and the small warm feeling of being the kind of person who is easy to work with. She would have laughed if you had told her she had sold something. She would have said, sold what? I did not do anything.
That is exactly right. She did not do anything. That was the thing that was bought.
And here is what nobody tells you about a small sale: the second one is not a decision. The first one is a decision. The second one is a habit with a decision's clothes on. By the fifth or sixth time, there is no meeting where you agree to anything. There is only the way you do things, and the way you do things has a shape now, and the shape has a shelter in it where the rain does not reach you.
You know your parking space. You have known it for a while. It is not fourteen steps and it is not a printer. It might be the tone you use with one particular person so that the room stays smooth. It might be the thing you have never once said at your mother's table. It might be the number you round, or the email you do not send, or the opinion you had in your twenties and put away in a drawer because having it out on the counter was making everything harder.
You did not sell your soul. You sold a small silence. And the price was so small that you never wrote it down anywhere, which is why you have never been able to find it since.
The receipt you never kept
There is a sentence in Scripture that is short enough to fit on a hand.
You were bought with a price. Do not become the servants of men.1 Corinthians 7:23
Read it again slowly, because both halves are doing work.
The first half is a settled fact and it happened without you. You were bought. It is past tense and it is finished and the price was not a parking space. Somebody looked at you, all of you, the version of you that rounds numbers and keeps quiet by the printer, and paid what He paid, and He did not negotiate the figure down when He saw the whole file.
The second half is the part that concerns your Monday. Do not become the servants of men. Not do not work for men. Not do not be kind to men, or agreeable, or easy to have in a meeting. Paul is not writing a resignation letter and neither am I. The word is servants, and a servant is a person whose allegiance has changed hands.
That is the whole of it. Allegiance, not employment.
And your allegiance is not on the market, because it was already bought. That is not my encouragement: the written word says you were bought with a price, past tense and finished, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my paragraph who bears witness with your spirit that what He paid still stands.
Because here is the thing about a small sale that makes it worse than a big one, not better. A big compromise announces itself. It wakes you at three in the morning. It gets a name in your own head and you know where it lives, and a thing you can name is a thing you can bring to God. A small one never gets named. It slides underneath the place where you examine your life, and it sits there quietly rearranging what you are willing to say, and by the time you notice, it does not feel like a sale. It feels like maturity. It feels like having learned how the world works.
And the reason it hurts to read that verse is not that you have been caught. It is that some part of you has known for a while, and has had no word for it, and a thing without a word cannot be handed over.
You are not being caught out this morning. The word says there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ, and it is the Spirit who makes that true in a body, so a woman can go looking for a price with her shoulders coming down rather than going up.
So let us give it a word. You took a price. Not a crime, not a scandal, not the kind of thing anyone else would even see. A price. Something came to you, and something in you went quiet, and the trade was so small that you have carried it for years without ever once naming it out loud.
Naming it is not the same as being condemned for it. God is not building a case against you this morning. He already has the whole file and He paid for it and the payment stands.
And nothing you find today changes what you are. The written word says you are a child of God, and the Spirit Himself bears witness with your spirit that it is so, which means the naming is for your sake and never once for His information. The naming is for you, because you cannot refuse a price you have never once said out loud, and you can refuse one you have.
That is the only work in front of you today. Not a resignation. Not a confrontation. Not a great burning of bridges that would cost your household something God never asked it to pay. Just this: find the price, say what it was, and put your allegiance back where it was bought to be.
You are not being asked to blow up your life. Hear that plainly, because the enemy of your soul would love this message to end with you doing something enormous and unwise, so that tomorrow you can call the whole thing a mistake and go back to the parking space.
You are being asked to do one accurate thing.
Find the price. Not the sin, not the story, not the whole history of how you got here. The price. The small good thing that came to you the day you went quiet. Say what it was.
Because the moment you can say what you took, you can hand it back. And the moment you hand it back, the arrangement is over, whether or not anybody else in the building ever knows there was one.
And you are free to say it out loud. Not once you are braver and not once you have worked out what it means: the word says it is for freedom that Christ has set us free, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that true in a mouth in an ordinary room tonight.
Declare this over yourself
The authority to speak this is not yours by nature and it is not your nerve. It is Christ's, and because you are in Christ it has been given to you, the way an ambassador carries a word that was never his own idea. So this is not a technique for fixing your workplace. You speak it under not my will, but Thine, and He may answer in His own way and on ground you cannot see, and whatever He does with the building is His business and not the measure of you.
Now say these out loud, where you can hear your own voice.
- Price, you were paid to me once and I am handing you back this morning. Jesus, You bought me at a price of Your own, and a woman already bought is not for sale twice.
- Silence, get out of my mouth where you were bought and paid for. The Word of God says I was bought with a price and must not become the servant of men, so I speak as one who serves the One who paid, in the name of Jesus.
- Lord, You hold the only claim there is on me and You have held it since the day You paid for it. I am not for sale at that price and I am not for sale at a better one, and my allegiance is coming home to You this morning and staying home.
