Where It WentProverbs 27:23

What The Small Ones Add Up To

This message is for the small everyday spends that add up, quietly, to more than anything you have ever called a priority

Ruth Ann has never in her life bought a thing she could not afford, and she has never once looked at her statement.

Those two facts sit right next to each other in her and she has never noticed the strangeness of it. She is careful. Everybody who knows her would say so and they would be right. She does not carry a balance, she does not buy on credit, she has darned the same two dish towels for eleven years and she thinks about buying a coat the way other people think about a move.

So there has never been a reason to look. Nothing has ever gone wrong. Looking at a statement is what you do when there is trouble, and there has not been trouble in that house since a bad winter a long time ago.

Her nephew set the app up on her phone in the spring because he was worried about something else entirely, and one evening in June, waiting on a pot, she opened it.

She scrolled for a while. Then she scrolled back up and started again, slower.

The thing that stopped her was not a large item. There were no large items. There was not one single line on that page that she could not account for in a sentence, and not one she was ashamed of, and not one she would call a mistake.

That was exactly the trouble.

Because the page was nothing but small ones. Two here. A few there. The gas station, the drugstore, the place that does the good bread, a thing for the porch, a thing for the grandbaby, the same four or five names over and over and over down the whole column, month after month, every one of them reasonable, every one of them defensible, every one of them nothing.

And when she got to the bottom and looked at what all that nothing came to, she sat down on the kitchen chair with the pot going behind her.

It was more than she had given in a year to the one thing she would have named first if you had woken her from a dead sleep and asked her what she cared about.

Now, hear me, because this is where a person starts hitting themselves and I am not going to let that happen in my kitchen.

Ruth Ann did nothing wrong. There is not one line on that page a judge would look twice at. She did not waste anything. She did not lie to anybody, including herself, and she has not been secretly frivolous for forty years while pretending to be careful.

She is careful. That is the whole point. She is careful about every single item and she had never once looked at the column.

That is not a moral failure. That is arithmetic, and arithmetic is very patient.

You have your own version of this, and yours will not look like hers. Yours might be four small monthly payments or a habit at lunchtime or a hundred small kindnesses to people who did not need them. It is a page of items that are each too small to be worth a thought, and you have never put them side by side, because nothing on it has ever been big enough to make you.

Nobody is calling you careless. You may well be the most careful person you know.

The small ones just add up, and they have been adding up in the dark.

What The Small Ones Add Up To

The verse is kinder than we make it

Most folks have this thing pointed backwards, and backwards it will wear you out.

We say it like the Lord told us: get your heart right first, and then the money will straighten itself. Which lands the whole weight on producing a feeling you do not have at the end of a long day, and you cannot get one of those by trying, any more than you can get to sleep by trying.

He said it the other way. Where the treasure is, the heart goes and settles there. The treasure first. The heart after.

And that is a mercy, plain and simple. You are not shut out behind a feeling you cannot make. That is not me being nice to you, that is the order the written word puts it in, and the Holy Spirit set it down that way because He knows exactly what a woman has left in her at nine o'clock at night, and it is not warmth on demand.

You move something small. The heart comes along behind it, walking, the way a heart travels.

Now hear the old man in Proverbs, who kept animals and knew what he was talking about.

Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds.Proverbs 27:23

He does not say count them so you will feel bad. He says look, because a thing you have not looked at is a thing that has been going on without you. A shepherd who has not walked the field in a season does not have a smaller flock. He has a flock he does not know.

And listen. You are not being asked to feel guilty about a single item on that page. Nowhere in Scripture is smallness a sin, and the Spirit of God has never once convicted a grandmother over a loaf of good bread. He is not in the business of shrinking people. He is in the business of showing them their own field.

What a column is for

I will not tell you what to do about any figure on that page. Not one. Not an amount, not a share, not a rule of thumb, because I do not know your life and it would be a fool's errand for me to try, and the minute I did you would be taking money advice out of a message about your soul.

What I will tell you is what the page is.

It is a mirror that cannot flatter you and cannot accuse you. It has no opinion. It has dates. And for most of us it is very nearly the only honest thing in the house on the subject, because everything else we know about ourselves we know from memory, and memory is a kind liar.

And you can look at it without dread. That is not grit, that is where you stand: the word says there is no condemnation now for anybody in Christ, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that land in a body, so a woman opens the app and her shoulders come down instead of going up. Conviction shows you a thing and gives you a door. Condemnation shows you a thing and leaves the room. If what comes off that page is despair, it is not from Him.

And what you love, you truly love. You named it before you were fully awake. The word says God is the one working in you both to want and to do, and His Spirit has been the one keeping that love alive in you all these years while the column filled up in another room.

Nothing about you needs replacing. Something needs looking at.

The breakthrough

So here is the moment, and it is small, and I mean that as a comfort.

Read one line out loud.

Not the column. Not a plan for the year, and no promises made standing up at ten at night, which is the worst hour God ever made for deciding things. One line, spoken into the air of the room you are sitting in, so it quits being a number in a list and becomes a sentence about a life.

Something happens to a thing when it is said out loud that does not happen when it is read. That is why He gave us confession and not just agreement, and it is His Spirit who makes a spoken word land in a person instead of sliding off.

You are free to lay a pipe. Not free once the page is tidy, and not free when you feel more spiritual about it: the written word says it is for freedom that Christ set you free, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an ordinary woman believe that on an ordinary Thursday in her own kitchen.

And the thing you named half asleep is already yours to water. God is not withholding permission for your treasure to go where your love already went. Every good gift comes down from Him, says the word, and the Spirit is the one who lets a person spend like a daughter in her father's house instead of like a stranger asking.

Give the water somewhere to go. The garden knows what to do after that.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Little column, you are arithmetic and you are not a verdict on me. Scripture says look well to the flocks, so I am looking at you in the light after forty years in the dark, and looking is the whole of what you were ever owed.
  2. Old habit of memory, get out of this kitchen in the name of Jesus. You have been reading my life back to me off a flattering page instead of the real one, and I am done being comforted by a kind liar.
  3. Lord, my heart follows my treasure, so I am moving the treasure, and what I say I love and what I fund are becoming the same thing. You have kept that love alive in me all these years while I was not looking, and laying the pipe is what I am doing today.
