Malia's brother says she is two different people, and he does not mean it as a criticism, and it lands on her like one anyway.
He said it in the kindest possible way at the end of a long evening, comparing her at that table with her in the room she works in, and he was not being clever and he was not making a point. He simply described what he had seen, the way a brother does, and then he went to bed.
She sat out on the porch afterwards for a long time.
Because the honest answer is that she is not two different people. She is one person, of whom a specific part now stays in the car.
It started with something small and it started for a good reason. There was a thing about her, a real thing, not a fault, that she noticed early on did not sit easily in that room. Nobody was unkind about it. Nobody said anything at all, which is exactly why it worked: there was a very slight cooling, a fractional pause, the kind of thing you would never be able to prove and could not possibly raise with anybody.
So she stopped bringing it in. Just there. Just in that room. It seemed like a small and sensible piece of self-management and it genuinely was.
That was six years ago.
Here is what she saw on the porch, and it is the part that matters. It did not stay in that room. It never does. A thing you learn to leave outside one door gradually stops being packed at all, and by now there are whole months where she has not brought it anywhere: not to her friends, not to her own kitchen, not to God at three in the morning.
She did not lose it. She stopped carrying it, and a thing that is never carried gets left where it was last put down.
Now I want to stay here for a minute and not rush, because this is a wound and I am not going to walk past a wound to get to a lift.
There is a particular ache in being loved by people who have only ever met most of you. It is not loneliness exactly. Loneliness is being unaccompanied. This is being accompanied and unrecognized at the same time, which is stranger and quieter and much harder to say out loud without sounding ungrateful, so most people who feel it never mention it once.
If that is you, I am not going to tell you it is fine and I am not going to hurry you off it.
You have your own version. Something about you goes into the car before you go in, and it started somewhere specific for a reason that was sound, and it has spread further than the room it started in.
Nobody is calling you a hypocrite. That is not what this is.
Something was sold, and it went for a room that stayed comfortable, and nobody in that room ever knew they had bought it.

What you were bought back from is named, and it is not a sin list
There is a sentence in Peter about redemption that names the thing we were bought out of, and it is not the thing people expect.
Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers.1 Peter 1:18
From your vain conversation received by tradition. From the empty way of living handed down to you. Not primarily from a list of crimes. From an inherited manner of being, a set of adjustments and accommodations passed on by people who were themselves only doing what they had been shown.
That is worth sitting with, because it means the very thing you are describing to yourself as sensible self-management is the exact category He redeemed you out of by name.
And hear what is already settled over you. You were bought back, and the whole of you was bought. That is not my sentiment: the written word says you were redeemed with the precious blood of Christ, and it does not say a portion of you was, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my paragraph who makes that land on a woman sitting out on a porch at the end of a long evening.
And you are already fully known. Not once you have brought it into a room, and not once anybody understands: the word says the Spirit searches all things, even the deep things, and that He knows what is in you, so there is one place where nothing has ever been left in the car, and it has been that way the entire six years.
That is the thing to hold tonight if you hold nothing else. Somewhere, you have never once been partial.
What is not being asked of you
I am going to be very plain now, because this is where a message like this starts handing out instructions that cost other people money.
Nobody here is telling you to bring it into that room. I do not know your room. I do not know what it would cost you, who depends on your income, or whether the fractional cooling you felt six years ago was the whole of what was there or the tip of something you were wise to respect. You read that room. I did not.
Nobody is telling you to make an announcement, correct anybody, explain yourself, or hand anything in. Not one word of that.
And I am not naming your work or your trade. There is nothing wrong with the place you spend your days. This happens wherever human beings sit down together and one of them is slightly different from the rest, which is every table there has ever been, including the good ones.
So hear what is not required. You do not have to prove anything to be whole. Nothing in Scripture makes your wholeness depend on being received well, and the Spirit of God has never once assessed a person by how a room handled them.
And the six years have not damaged you. He restores the years the locusts ate, says the written word, and the Spirit is entirely able to hand a woman back a thing she stopped carrying, intact, without her having to go and find it first.
So here is the moment, and it is a sentence in your own house, not a declaration in theirs.
Say the thing out loud. Once. On its own.
Name what you leave in the car. Not an explanation of why, and the why was good. Not a plan for where you are going to take it next. Just the thing itself, said into the actual air of the room you are in tonight, in your own voice.
Something happens when a thing is spoken aloud that does not happen while it is left somewhere. That is why He gave us confession rather than mere agreement, and it is His Spirit who makes a spoken sentence land in a body instead of glancing off it.
And it is safe to bring here. Not safe once the room changes and not safe once somebody apologizes: the word says perfect love casts out fear, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an ordinary porch a place where the whole of a person can sit down without bracing.
You are not for sale, and the price was already paid in the other direction. You were redeemed, says the written word, not with silver and gold but with something that does not lose its value, and the Spirit bears witness with your spirit that He bought all of you and not a portion.
Bring it in. That is the whole move.
Declare this over yourself
- Fractional pause in that room, you are half a second of cooling and you were never a verdict on me. Scripture says I was redeemed from an empty way of living handed down, and you are exactly the thing He named.
- Old habit of packing light, get out of this house in the name of Jesus. You started at one door for one good reason and you have been emptying my hands at every door since.
- Lord, You know what is in me and I have never once been partial in front of You. I am not for sale, not at that price and not at a better one, and bringing the whole of me into this room is what I am doing tonight.
