He typed it into the cell at twenty-three, sitting on the floor of a rented flat with a cracked laptop balanced on a moving box.
He was not greedy. That is the first thing to understand about him, and it is the first thing to understand about you. He had watched his mother do sums at a kitchen table with the heating off, and he had made himself a promise about a figure, and the figure meant one thing: nobody would ever be doing those sums in his house.
He reached it at thirty-nine. On a Tuesday. In a car park.
He remembers the car park because he remembers waiting for something to happen in his chest, and nothing did. He sat there with the engine off and the phone in his hand and the notification still open, and the feeling he had been saving toward for sixteen years simply did not arrive. There was no floor under him. There was only the same shaped hollow there had always been, with a bigger number sitting in it.
Within a fortnight he had typed a new figure into the cell.
He did not decide to do that. He wants you to know that too. There was no moment where he sat down and chose to move the line. He just found himself one evening reasoning about interest rates and care homes and what happens if you get twelve years of something expensive at the end, and by the time he had finished reasoning, the number was larger and the peace was still on the far side of it.
That is when it occurred to him, and it frightened him more than the sums ever had.
The figure had never once been about the figure.
Because a number that means safety behaves in a way no real number behaves. Real numbers hold still. You reach them and they are reached. This one retreats exactly as fast as you approach, and it has done that every time, and it will keep doing it, because the thing it was hired to do is a thing no amount can do.
And you know this already. You knew it before I said it.
You have your own cell with your own figure in it. You may never have typed it anywhere. It might live in your head, revised quietly and often, and you might be the only person alive who knows what it currently is. But you know the exact feeling of getting near it, and you know the strange gray disappointment when the ground you were promised turns out not to be there, and you know that you moved it, and you know you did not mean to.
You are not being accused of anything here. You are being told what you already suspected: the number was never going to hold you, and it has been exhausting itself trying.

The word for a share of land
There is a word underneath all of this, and it is older than money.
When the land was divided, every family in Israel got a portion. A measured share, marked with lines on the ground, and that share was your life. It fed you. It told you who you were and where you came from and where you would be buried. A man without a portion was a man with nothing beneath his feet.
One tribe was given no land at all. And the word that comes back again and again about them is this: the Lord Himself is their portion. Not a consolation. Not a spiritual substitute for the real thing. The actual share. The ground.
Then David, who had land, picks the word up and uses it about himself.
The Lord is my portion and my cup. You hold my lot in Your hand. The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places.Psalm 16:5 and 6
Sit in that a moment, because it is doing something quiet and enormous.
A portion is what you get. A cup is what is poured for you. A lot is the share that falls to you when the pieces are drawn. Three words for allotment, stacked one on top of another, and every one of them is a word about how much a person has been given. And the answer David gives to all three is not an amount. It is a Person.
That is the whole reversal, and it costs you nothing to receive.
You have a portion, and it is already allotted. That is not my encouragement: the written word says the Lord is my portion and my cup, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my paragraph who turns a legal allotment into something a man can feel under his feet on a Tuesday evening.
Your number was applied for a job it was never qualified for. It was asked to be the ground under your feet, the thing that finally makes the floor stop moving, and it has been failing that job faithfully for years, and every time it failed you assumed the figure was too small.
The figure was not too small. It was the wrong kind of thing.
And you are not short of anything you were ever promised. The word says thou maintainest my lot, and the maintaining is His verb rather than yours, and the Spirit is the one doing that keeping while a man is doing arithmetic at eleven at night.
He is your portion. Which means the ground under you is not an amount, it is a Person who does not fluctuate, does not correct, does not retreat when you approach Him, and cannot be revised upward in an anxious hour on a Tuesday evening.
And you were never going to be held by a figure. That is not pessimism: the written word says riches make themselves wings and fly away, and it is said the way a man is warned about a rope that will not take his weight, and the Spirit is the one who lets that land with no fear attached to it at all.
Nothing here asks you to stop saving. Wisdom stores in the summer, and a person who plans is not a person of small faith, and no one is going to stand over you and call your prudence unbelief.
The number gets to stay. It just loses its job.
Because here is what is true in this room right now, and it does not depend on where the figure currently sits. You already have a portion. It was allotted to you and it was not allotted according to what you had managed to accumulate by the time you turned thirty-nine. It is the Lord Himself, and He is not the reward at the end of the number, He is the ground beneath the whole of it.
So the retreating line stops being an accusation. It was never evidence that you had not done enough. It was evidence of what money actually is, which is a good and useful tool that was quietly handed a role it was never built to carry, and it has been buckling under that role in your chest for years.
And your keeping was never arithmetic job to do. The word says the eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms, and underneath is where the weight actually rests, and the Spirit is the one who lets a man feel what he is standing on rather than merely agree that it is there.
Set the tool down and pick it back up as a tool.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority to speak to a figure that has been governing your sleep has been given to you. These are not magic words and the power is not in the wording. You speak them under His will, not my will but Thine, and however He answers, He answers as the God who knows exactly what you need.
- Number, you are not my guarantor and you never were. You are a tool and you are useful, and the Lord is my portion, and He does not retreat when I get near Him.
- Fear of not having enough, get out of my house in the name of Jesus. The Word of God says the Lord is my portion and my cup and He holds my lot in His hand, so the seat you have been sitting in is taken.
- Lord, You are my portion today, with the figure reached or unreached, and I have a share that no market sets. I am not carrying the guaranteeing of my own life, because You have never once handed me that job.
