The Speech You Rehearsed

This message is for the explanation you have been drafting and revising for weeks, for the moment somebody finally asks you what happened

Cara has four versions of it now, and she has never said any of them out loud to another human being.

There is the short one, for people who ask in passing and do not really want the details. There is a slightly longer one for people who would. There is the one for a particular relative, which has a whole passage in it that does not appear anywhere else. And there is the one that is closest to true, which is the longest, and which she has only ever run through in the car.

She revises them. That is the part she is slightly embarrassed about. She will be doing something completely unrelated, standing at a sink, and a better phrase will arrive for the middle section, and she will try it a couple of times and keep it.

Nobody has asked her yet. That is the thing. In eleven weeks, not one person has actually said the words what happened, and she has four polished versions ready for a question that has never once been put to her.

She noticed on a Tuesday, halfway through improving a sentence about timing, and she stopped in the middle of the kitchen and said, out loud: what am I doing.

Here is what she was doing, and I think it is worth naming plainly.

She was not preparing to be honest. All four versions are honest; that is not the issue. She was preparing to be received. Every one of those drafts is an attempt to construct a version of events after which the listener will still think well of her, and the reason there are four is that different people need different versions of her to remain intact.

That is not vanity. It is much more tiring than vanity. It is the work of a person who believes, somewhere below language, that her welcome anywhere depends on the quality of her account.

You have your own version of this. There is an explanation, you have revised it, and if somebody asked you tonight you could deliver it cleanly, and possibly nobody has asked.

Nobody is asking here either. I want to say that at the front. I am not going to ask you what happened at any point in this article. Whether it was your doing or nobody's changes not one word of what I have to say, and there is no place in this piece where you have to give an account of anything.

The Speech You Rehearsed

The son had one too, and he had rehearsed it on the road

There is a detail in that story that most people skip over, and once you see it you cannot unsee it.

And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.Luke 15:21

Now go back and read what he had planned to say. It is in the text, a few verses earlier, when he is still in the far country. He drafted it there. It has three parts, and the third part is a proposal: make me as one of thy hired servants.

That third part is missing here.

He gets two thirds of the way through his own speech and the proposal never gets said, because the father is already talking to the servants about a robe. The plan was solid, the delivery was going fine, and it was interrupted by a welcome that was not waiting for it.

That is what the text actually shows. Not a father who listened carefully and then decided. A father who did not need the rest of it.

And now hear what is already true over you. Your account is not what you are received on. That is not my encouragement: the written word has the welcome overrunning the speech in real time, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my paragraph who makes that land in a woman standing in a kitchen improving a sentence about timing.

And nothing you are drafting is news. The word says there is not a word in my tongue but lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether, and the Spirit searches all things, so all four versions have already been heard in full, including the one you only run through in the car.

Your welcome was never priced

This is the sentence this whole category exists for.

Nothing about how you are received depends on what is in your hands or on how well you can explain how they got empty.

And your standing has not moved. Not down in this stretch and not up in the good one: the word says by grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, and the Spirit bears witness with your spirit that you are a child of God, which is a fact about family rather than a conclusion drawn from evidence.

And no version of you needs to be kept intact for God. That is the exhausting part of the four drafts and it can stop. The word says He knoweth our frame, He remembereth that we are dust, which means the true version was already the one He was working with, and the Spirit is the one who makes that a relief rather than an exposure.

The breakthrough

So here is the moment, and it does not require you to explain anything to anybody.

Turn both hands over. Palms up. Hold them level and empty in front of you.

That is what is actually there, and I am not going to ask you to imagine anything into them, because a woman who has been through this can spot that immediately.

Just hold them open and empty, and stay in that posture while you hear this.

You are already received. Not once you have delivered the account and not once anybody has understood: the word has the robe called for before the speech was finished, and the Spirit is the one who makes that a present fact rather than a scene in a story about somebody else's family.

And the third part never has to be said. The son's proposal, the plan for a reduced arrangement where he comes back as something less, is the part that got interrupted, and it is the part of your draft that is doing the most damage. The word says the father called him son twice in the next four verses, and the Spirit bears witness with your spirit that this is what you are called, so there is no lesser version of you to negotiate for.

And you are not being disciplined. As plainly as I can say it. Nothing in that father's running is punitive and nothing in it is instructional, and the Spirit of God has never once used a hard stretch as a lever on somebody He loves.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Fourth version, you are eleven weeks of drafting for a question nobody has asked. Scripture says the father called for the robe while the boy was still speaking, so the welcome was never waiting on the quality of my account.
  2. Old belief that I have to stay intact in somebody's eyes, get out of this kitchen in the name of Jesus. You are the reason there are four of these, and God knows my frame and remembers I am dust and has been working with the true one all along.
  3. Lord, You did not let him finish, and the part You interrupted was the part where he asked to come back as something less. I came back with empty hands and You ran to meet me anyway, and my welcome was never priced.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
