Marcia's sister comes on Saturdays, and Saturdays are the good part of the week.
Dionne arrives loud, the way she has arrived since they were girls, and she is halfway through the story before her coat is off. It is about her son. It is a good story and it is not an easy one, and there is a part coming that she has clearly been saving all week, because she keeps circling back to it and then jumping away again, the way people do when the thing matters more than they want to let on.
Marcia is listening. She wants that on the record, because it is true. She loves this woman. She has loved her for forty-one years and she would put her hand in a fire for her.
And somewhere between one sentence and the next, her thumb goes to the phone on the arm of the chair.
She is not bored. She has not stopped caring. Nothing in the room has gone wrong. It is a small motion, three seconds long, and the app opens on a figure that has not changed since Thursday and could not possibly have changed since Thursday, and she closes it again and looks back up, and Dionne is still going.
Nobody saw it. That is the thing. Nobody ever sees it, because it is three seconds, and three seconds is nothing.
Except Marcia saw it. And later, when the house was quiet and the plates were done, she sat in that same chair and asked herself a question she had never once asked, which was: how long has that been happening?
The answer, when it came, was not comfortable. It has been happening for years. It happens on the phone to her mother. It happened during the school play. It happened at the hospital in the corridor while they were waiting for news, and she remembers being ashamed of it for about four seconds and then never thinking about it again.
And here is what she found underneath it, sitting there with the lamp on.
It was never a decision. Not once. There has never been a morning in Marcia's life where she sat down and said: from today, the number gets checked before the people. She would be horrified. Ask her what she treasures and she will tell you her family, and she is not lying and she is not performing, and if you handed her a pen she would write it down and sign it.
But the hand does what the hand has been trained to do. And her hand has been trained by ten thousand small unremarkable moments to go to a square of glass whenever there is a gap in the air.
You know your own version of this. It may not be a sister on a Saturday. It might be your husband over dinner, or your daughter in the car, or the one friend who actually rings instead of texting, and there is a small motion that happens in the middle of what they are saying, and you have never once counted how often.
Nobody is putting you on trial. Something has simply been given the gap.
And a thing that gets the gap, every time, in the middle of the people you love, has quietly been given a seat.

Order is the one part of a heart you can actually see
Let me clear the ground first, because if I do not you will spend the rest of this defending yourself and you will not hear me.
Checking is not sin. Knowing what you have is not sin. A woman who knows the state of her own house is called wise in Scripture, not faithless, and I am not about to stand here and tell you that carefulness is a sickness. It is not. Put that down. The Holy Spirit has never once convicted a woman for knowing what is in her own purse, because that conviction is nowhere in the written word and He does not improvise.
The question is not whether you look. The question is when, and how often, and whether that order was ever chosen by anybody at all.
Because you cannot see a motive. I cannot see yours and you cannot see mine, and anybody who tells you they can read a heart from across the room is guessing out loud with confidence. But you can see an order. You can see what a hand reaches for in a gap. That is not an accusation, that is a timestamp, and a timestamp will tell you the truth about a house without ever putting a single person on trial.
Now hear what has already been settled about you, because this is where the freedom is. You are not a woman with a divided heart who has to go and manufacture an undivided one. That is not my encouragement to you, it is what God says over anyone in Christ: He writes His law on the heart and puts His Spirit inside to carry it, and it is the Holy Spirit doing that work in you right now, not the strength of your own resolve and not the volume of my sentence. You are not being asked to become somebody new. You are being shown a habit that does not match who you already are.
Hear the psalm. It is written by a man who had money and knew exactly what money does.
If riches increase, set not your heart upon them.Psalm 62:10
Notice what he does not say. He does not say get rid of them. He does not say the increase is the problem. He says watch where the heart goes, because the heart is the thing that moves, and it moves quietly, and it moves toward whatever it is given.
And this next part is where half of us fall down, so I am going to say it plainly. You are not further from God because you have money, and you are not nearer to Him because you have less. That is the written word's own posture, and the Spirit who wrote it has never once weighed a believer by a balance. A number is not a verdict on your soul in either direction. Money is a tool, and it is a magnificent tool: it has fed people, buried people with dignity, put a child on a plane to say goodbye in time.
A tool is a faithful servant right up until the day you walk in and find it sitting at the head of your table.
It did not climb up there
Nobody in that house voted. That is what makes this so hard to see and so easy to fix.
An idol in the Bible almost never announces itself. It is not built in a day and it is not sworn to. It gets carried in small, and it gets set down somewhere convenient, and the room grows up around it. By the time anybody notices, it is not sitting on the table, it is holding the table up, and moving it feels like moving the house.
So here is the truth over you while you sit there. You are not stuck with the order you have. God says He is the one who works in you both to will and to do, and His Spirit is the one who makes that real in an ordinary hand on an ordinary Saturday, so this is not a matter of you going away and trying harder until the reaching stops. The authority to say where a thing sits in your own house is already yours, given in Christ and written down long before you noticed you needed it, and the Spirit is the one who gives that word its weight when you speak it.
And listen, because this is the doctrine that dances: the thing in the seat has no claim on it. None. It cannot argue. It has never heard a prayer, it has never kept a promise, it has never once stayed awake with anybody at three in the morning. It is a number. It has been holding a chair it could never sit in.
I am not asking you to feel guilty about a habit, and I am not asking you to go without anything, and I will not tell you one word about what to do with any figure, because that is not what this is and it is not mine to say.
I am asking you to move a dresser.
The seat at the head of your table has an owner and He has been in the room the whole time, not sulking, not keeping score, glad you are here. You are His, and that was settled before you had a balance to check, because the word says you were bought and sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, and He is the one making that land on you now rather than any effort you are about to make.
You do not have to work up the authority to say so. It was handed to you. A daughter in Christ speaks about the arrangement of her own house with the King's weight behind her, and she is not being clever and she is not casting a spell. She is turning a key in a lock God already cut.
That is the whole move. It takes about forty seconds, and it does not need anybody else in the room.
Declare this over yourself
- Balance, you are a tool and you have been sitting in a seat that is not yours. Come down out of it now, in the name of Jesus, because Scripture says if riches increase I do not set my heart on them, and you have never once been able to hold a heart you were given.
- Old habit of reaching into the gap while somebody I love is still talking, you do not get the gap any more. The gap belongs to the people in front of me and to the God who put them there, and I am giving it back to them today.
- Lord, You have the head of this table and You have had it all along. My hands are open and my sister is still talking, and the listening is what I am doing now.
